For this week's homework, you will either compare or contrast two of the short stories that we have read this year in class.
To compare means to highlight the similarities.
To contrast means to highlight the differences.
Make sure that you only compare or contrast - the choice is yours - but don't do both.
You may choose to compare or contrast:
A. "Seventh Grade" and "Thank You, Ma'm"
B. "Seventh Grade" and "Charles"
C. "Thank You, Ma'm" and "Charles"
"Seventh Grade" and "Thank You, M'am" can have similarities. They both include a protagonist that is a boy. They both also include a female secondary character. They both contain literary elements and both have a different background.
ReplyDeleteCHOICE B
ReplyDelete"Seventh Grade" and "Charles" sort of have their similarities in ways. 1st of all - each story has to do with acedemics. Secondly, (by prediction for part of it), the antagonist in both stories is Victor's love for Teresa (in "Seventh Grade"), and the theory that Laurie is Charles (He COULD be, but he may NOT be - but a lot of people think he is.) Also, both have a comic relief in some way. Like how in "Charles" Laurie treats his dad badly, and can be funny with the insults, and how in "Seventh Grade", Michael made a scowl or something to get girls to like him.
"Seventh Grade" and "Thank You Ma'm" are alike because they are both short stories about boys with a situation that needs to be resolved. In "Thank You Ma'm" Roger is poor and wants money to buy Blue swade shoes, in the end a lady named Mrs. Jones feeds him dinner and hands him $10 for the shoes. In the short story "Seventh Grade" a boy named victor likes this girl named Tereca but doesn't know what to say to her, in the end Tereca asks victor if he could help her with her french and they begin to spend more time together.
ReplyDeleteI would like to compare the 2 books " Thankyou Ma'm" and "Charles" i think they are very similar because Roger is a boy who always gets in trouble and so is Charles.
ReplyDeleteThe similaritys in 7th Grade and Charles are Lory and Victer both go to school. Both have a problem. Lory is in contact with a negative in fluence, Victer is trying to impress Teresa.
ReplyDeletein the story Thank you m'am.....some things that i was able to compare to Seventh grade is,1. there was a conflict in both story's..2 the setting or theme was based on a boy who had a problem with a girl... the difference of the story's is...1 they had a different conflict..2 there was more action in the story seventh grade because mrs. jones was being mean to roger
ReplyDeletelike in the book CHARLES and the book named "THANK YOU M'AM" those to book the charactor always have a problom because they are dealing with a very im portant problem.one has a theaf and the other has to make up a person.
ReplyDeleteIm doing "Seventh Grade"and "Thankyou Man" They both have boy protaganist. And they both get ambarrass by the antaganist.
ReplyDeletetwo books that have the same sitting are the seventh grade and the book that we just finish have the same problem AT SCHOOL one has to impress agirl and the other has to lie to there parents
ReplyDeleteI am comparing thank you m'am and seventh grade. In sg (seventh grade) and tm (thank you m'am) the protaganist are both boys and both have man vs. self conflict and the confilct started over a girl/woman. I can't think of anything else.
ReplyDeleteI would like to compare the two stories "Thank You M'am" and "Charles". First in the both stories the two boys are causeing trouble.Second, they are different because in Charles the kids are in kindegarden, and in Thank you m'am the boy is around 14.
ReplyDeleteI would like to contrast "Seventh Grade" and "Thank You, Ma'm"
ReplyDeletebecause i dont think that they are alike at all. For example the story "Seventh Grade" it's about a boy in seventh grade. In "Thank You, Ma'm" there is nothing about seventh grade. Another example is. In "Thank You, Ma'm" there is a women. In seventh grade there is a girl, not a grown women.
I have chose to compare "Thank You M'am" and "Seventh Grade". Both short stories are about a boy who has a problem that needs to be resolved. In "Thank You M'am" Roger is a poor boy that wants money to buy blue suede shoes. In the end of the story Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones gives ten dollars to Roger to buy the shoes. In the story "Seventh Grade" a boy named Victor likes a girl named Teresa. Teresa asks Victor to help him with her French so now they can spend time together.
ReplyDeleteI am able to compare Thank You, Ma'm and "Seventh Grade" because the antagonist is inside of them. The difference between the two stories is the actual problem.
ReplyDeleteseventh grade and charles there was both in each story negitive social problems. and they got solved the first problem is loris mom thinks that charles is a bad influence on lori. the conflic in seventh grade was victor liked tyresa and he embarresed himself in front of her. the both took place about school. they were both first person narration. and both problems were solved
ReplyDeleteI am contrasting "Seventh Grade" and "Thank You M'am". I think that they are very different. Seventh Grade takes place in a school and Thank You M'am takes place somewhere in the south, on a street and in a house. Another difference is that Seventh Grade takes place during the school day and Thank You M'am takes place at night. One last way Seventh Grade and Thank You M'am are different is that there were only two characters in Thank You M'am and in Seventh Grade there are at least three characters.
ReplyDeletethe short story the think u m'am is different from charels . I think that Becuase the problem that the charecter had to over come in the story think you m'am was haveing to steel a ladys pocketbook . the problem in the story charels is the lilltie was lieing to his parents. telling them that the boy charles was acting out in school. that is the differnts between the two storys.
ReplyDeleteI think Thank You M'am and Charles have simalarities because in the stories there are both, people doing the wrong thing. In Thank You M'am the boy tries to steel the woman's purse and in Charles the kindergardener keep getting on the teacher's nerves. In the stories there was a problem. In Thank you M'am the woman is teaching the boy to have manners, and in Charles the father and mother are trying to find out who Charles is.
ReplyDeleteI am going to contrast 7th Grade and Thank You Ma'm. I think the difference is that since they are both man vs self it is different because of how the conflict is resolved Victor solved his conflict on his own, while Roger had help from Mrs.Jones to get over his conflict.
ReplyDelete"Seventh Grade"And "Thank You Ma'm" are pretty much easy to compare. The reason being is beacause in both of the stories it includes a protagonist who are both boys and an secondary character included in both stories.Who appears often, but their really there to move the primary characters through the action. MEaning the main character the the problem. And last reason they are being compared is beacause i thing the both of the stories are frist person narration might be wrong about that one but, thats how i woud compar the short story togethere.
ReplyDeleteThis is a add on. Lory has a bad influence, Charles, he does bad things, is rude to teachers, and is what Lory talks about a lot.Victer is trying to impress Teresa. But to do it he lies and says he Knows french but he doesent. So Victer had to learn french soon because he was lucky his teacher was nice enough to let Victer slide once.
ReplyDeleteFor my response I have chosen to compare the two short stories "Seventh Grade" and "Thank You M'am". One thing that is the same is that both stories have the same type of problem. Both stories are about man vs. self. In "Thank You M'am", the main character has to overcome his habit of stealing from people. In "Seventh Grade" the main character has to overcome his fear of talking to girls.
ReplyDeleteThe similarites between 'Thank You Mam, and Charles" is that they both have to bad kids in the short stories which are Roger, and Charles, something else the stories have in common is that they are both short stories.
ReplyDeleteThe two short stories I would compare are Thank You Ma'm and Charles. The reason I chose these short stories is because both of the boy characters are very rude to others. In story Charles, Charles was rude to the teacher. In Thank You Ma'm, Roger was rude to Mrs. Jones, but toward the end of the story he was more polite.
ReplyDeleteThe simalaraties between Seventh Grade and Charles are that the main characters both have a problem inside them that needs to be solved. They are also both short stories. Also they both sort of have the same setting in school.
ReplyDelete"Seventh Grade" and "Thank You M'am" are alike because the protagonist has a problem. In "Seventh Grade" Victor is the protagonist. He has a man vs. self conflict because he likes Teresa but, his fears and shyness keep him from talking to her like a normal person. In "Thank You M'am" Roger is the protagonist. He also has a man vs. self conflict because he tried to steal Mrs. Jones big purse in the beginning of the story, but then in the end he realized that stealing is wrong.
ReplyDeleteSeventh Grade and Charles are alike because the narrator in each story have a force in them that is the protagonist
ReplyDeleteThank you m'am and charles have similaritys like the secondary or primary lady characters in the short story.
ReplyDeleteI would say "Thank you M'am" and "Seventh Grade" have similarities. In "thank you M'am" & "Seventh Grade" both of the charactures are in a Man vs. Self problem and they both come to the out come of conquering thier "antagonist".
ReplyDeleteChoice C "Thank You M'am" and "Charles"
ReplyDeleteThe short stories "Thank You M'am" and "Charles" are alike because the both involve problems with children. Mrs. Luella Washington Bates Jones helped Roger in a different way than the problem Lourie had in "Charles" so that is how the stories are different. The stories are also different because "Thank you M'am" is Man vs. Man conflict while "Charles" is a Man vs. Society conflict.
The two short stories "Charles" and "Thank You M'am" were very similar in my opinion. In booth short stories there was a boy that was causing a problem in "Thank You M'am" it was Rodger and in "Charles" it was Laurie (also know as "Charles"). In booth stories it focused mainly on a small group of people.
ReplyDeleteThere are a couple similarities in "Seventh Grade" and "Thank You Ma'm" one being that they both involve a boy protagonist. Another one being that both of the conflicts are man vs self.Victor overcoming and battling his shyness. And Rodger over coming the thing within himself that makes him think it is okay to steal.
ReplyDeleteThank you mam and 7th are alike in alot of different ways. One way they are alike is that they both have conflicts that need to be resolved. Roger was poor and needed money but ms.jones took him in and fed him. Cleaned him up and taught him wright from wrong. While victor needed help talking to victor and got to talk to her. So they both needed help.
ReplyDeleteI think the similarities in the two storys Tthank you m'am" and "Charels" is the kids in both storys werent being the best of people. In the short story charels the boy named Charels was misbehaving in ways, and in the short story thank you m'am Roger the boy tryed to steal the womans bag. These two stories are the same in the way of being a mean person.
ReplyDeleteThank you ma'm and Charles can compare because they both are about boys that have done something wrong, and because they both have literary elements.
ReplyDeleteThey can contrast by having a boy and girl protagonists, and one is man bs society and the other is man vs self.
"Seventh Grade" and Thank You Mam" could have similarities because they both have a boy as the protagonist and both have a source in themselves as the antagonist. These both stories contain female as the secondary characters which play an inportant role in the story.
ReplyDeleteI think Seventh Grade and Charles can contrast because charles is tring to get better in school, and first he is being bad and comes home telling the mom that its charles being bad.Seventh Grade involves a boy trying to get this girl to notice him and like him,he's trying to get her to be his girl.Thats why i think they can contrast.
ReplyDeleteI choose the two short stories "Thankyou ma'm" and "Charles",because these two young boys (Roger and Lourie) caused a major problem. In "Thankyou ma'm" Roger stole a womans bag,and in "Charles" Lourie lied to his parents about a boy named charles that has been causing problems in school but at the end of the storie it turned out there was never a boy named Charles. So in these two short stories both of these boy's have caused a problem.
ReplyDeleteI chose B: i loved both of these short stories so i had to pick them
ReplyDeleteI think that that seventh grade and Charles are verry much alike. I think this because victor (the protagonistn 7th grade) liked a girl but thought that the girl didnt like him, and in charles he was acting up in his new kindergarten class and he needed to clean up his act. so both victor and charles (aka laure) had a proble that they had fix.
that is only one of the ways that they are the same.
Charles and thankyou ma'm because lourie is always getting in trouble with things in school and Rodger was getting in trouble too but with stealing kind of the same...so that is my answer.
ReplyDeleteI am going to contrast "Charles" and "Thankyou ma'm". In "Charles" the protagonist is vs society meanwhile in "Thankyou ma'm" the protagonist is vs himself. Also, in "Charles" the protagonist was the narrorator unlike "Thankyou ma'm" where it was written in third person limited.
ReplyDeleteTo compare "thank you ma'm" and "Charles" the kids really caused some problems. In "Charles" lourie pertened to be a boy named charles and was causing problems in school.and in "Thank you ma'm" rogger stole the purse. To contast, they had different types of conflicts in "Thank you m'am" its man vs. self and in "Charles" its man vs. society.
ReplyDeleteChoice B : "Seventh Grade" and " Charles"
ReplyDeleteThe stories are similar, because they both talk about boys and school. The two stories are different by the protagonist, because in the story "Seventh Grade" the protagonist is a boy (Victor) and in "Charles" the protagonist is a woman ( Laurie`s mom).
"thank you M'am" and " Charles" acan contrast because in both books there were young boys that were causing problems like in "thank you M'am" Roger tried to steal a womans bag and in "Charles" Laurie lied to his parents about a boy named Charles who was causing problems when really it was just Laurie who was "Charles" oth stories are mainly focused on a smaller group of people
ReplyDelete"Seventh Grade" and "Charles" have 1 major similarity, as they both take place in school. The difference between them is that "7th Grade" is in a middle school while "Charles" is in a grade school.
ReplyDeleteI will compare and contrast Charles and Seventh Grade. Charle and Seventh grade are alike because they both have to deal with school releted things. There diffrent because the age diffrences of the two boys and the setting.
ReplyDeleteI coose the two stories "Thankyou ma'm" and "charles", because they both have a problem in there stoiers in thankyou ma'm Roger tryed to steel mrs jones bag and in Charles lourie lied to his parents about getting in trouble.
ReplyDeleteThe short stories "Thank you, Ma'm" and "Charles" are alike in many ways. In both stories the kids are both boys and are causing trouble. In both of the short stories both of the boys are being punished by woman. For example, in "Charles" the boy is being punished by the teacher and in "Thank you Ma'm" the boy is being punished by a woman. In both stories the antagonist is the thing inside them telling them to do something or a force within the protagonist. In "Charles" the Mom (protagonist) is worrying about the influence of Charles on her son, Laurie, which would be the antagonist. The antagonist in "Thank you Ma'm" is the voice in his head telling him to steal the woman's purse.
ReplyDeleteI think charles is different from thank you ma'm because charles is about a five year old lying to his parents saying that theirs a boy named charles being bad in school and thank you ma'm is about a boy named Roger running into a women trying to take her pocketbook and her grabin him taking him to her house washing him and feedingand from that he learned not to steal just to get a pair of plaid shoes.
ReplyDeleteI am choosing to compare "Thank You Ma'm" and "Seventh Grade"
ReplyDeleteIn both stories there is a boy (teen years) who is the protagonist that has a problem within them selves. There is Roger ("Thank You Ma'm") who is a poor boy who wants money for some new shoes. Then there is Victor("Seventh Grade") who is in love with Teresa but is to afraid to talk to her. They both got help from their secondary characters Teresa and Mrs. Jones. Roger gets help from Mrs. Jones because he learns that it is good to be trusted and Mrs. Jones is very good to him with food and money. Victor gets help from Teresa because she went up to Victor and got a conversation started which lead to Victor helping Teresa with french. So at the end both characters problems get resolved in the end and they end being very happy
Choice A:
ReplyDeleteI think that there are similarities in "Thank You Ma'm" and "Seventh Grade". One of the similarities they have is both main characters are both boys and they are both also the protagonist. Another similarity they have is both boys problems get resolved all in the end.
thank you m'am and charles a the same becuase both of the stories are about a boy who does bad things. the stoties are different becuase laurie lies to his mother about a boy named charles and laurie does alot of bad things but roger only does one bad thing.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to contrast "Thank you Ma'm" and "Seventh Grade'.I think whats diffrent about these storys are that In "Seventh Grade" Vicor kind of takes the long trip to getting teresa to notice him and he trys hard and goes through alot of effort to try and talk to her, when in "Thank you Ma'm the boy doest try to earn the money for the blue swade shoes he takes the hard way out and trys to steal money.Thats why i think these to storys are diffrent.
ReplyDeleteI choose the two short stories Thank you m'am and Charles to compare because they both had conflicts that needed to be solved, like Laurie's mom was so nervous that Charles was putting a bad influence on Laurie. Roger also had a problem and he was stealing stuff and Mrs.Jones was keeping him at her house so he can straighten up and there problems were both solved
ReplyDeleteI choose the two short stories ''Seventh Grade'' and ''Charles''. They are similar because they both have something to do with school. They are also similar because they both have a boy that is either the antagonist or the protagonist
ReplyDeleteI am comparing Charles and 7 grade. I think that they are very alike. Seventh Grade takes place in school and Charles takes place in school to something else that is the same is that in Charles he is a bad student Seventh Grade he trys to act smart but fails epic so that makes him bad student. One other thing is that the main charters both lied to some one.
ReplyDeleteI would like to compare and contrast "Thank you m'am" and "Charels". Their similarities are that Roger and Lorie and both boys. Another similarity is that they both do something wrong. A diference is that "Charels" is told by a first person view and " Thank you m'am" is told my a third person limited view. Another difference is that lorie is a little kid and roger is a teenager.
ReplyDeleteI choose to compare "Thank you M'am" and "Charles". They both have a boy doing something that society frowns upon. They both have a female secondary character
ReplyDeletethere are many differences beetween "thank you ma'm" and "charles". like settings, "charles" thakes place in a school room with almost funny surroundings. while "thank you ma'm" has a setting of tense and scary. and in "charles", Charles(laurie) is a bad influence or in a changing stage. while in "thank you ma'm", roger is in a stage where he cant tell right from wrong.
ReplyDeleteI chose the short stories "Thank you ma'm" and "Seventh grade" because in both stories the boys (Roger and Victor) both have to fight a fear or problem inside of them. Victor has to get over the fear of talking to a girl while Roger has to learn that even though he wanted the shoes stealing money was never the answer. By the end though both boys fight that one thing inside them and come out on top or in victory.
ReplyDeleteCHOICE B the differences between Seventh Grade and Charles is that in seveth grade it man versus self because victor is trying to defreat his fear against talking to theresea and in charles it is man versus society.
ReplyDeletei decided to do "thankyou ma'm" and and seventh grade because there simularities are that they were both told in third person view and the antogonist in both storys is a force within them selves and ther differences are that seventh grade is told in third person omnious and thankyou mam is told in third person limited
ReplyDeletethank you ma'm is similar to chrles because both luarie and roger needed to learn a lesson in not being bad.
ReplyDeleteI am comparing the two stories Thank You M'am and Charles. I think these books are similar becasue they are both about a boy who has problems/troubles. The boy in Charles is Charles and the boy who has the problem in Thank You M'am is Roger.
ReplyDeleteI am comparing "Seventh Grade" and "Charles". Both strories have young, male protagonists, and in both the antagonist isn't a human being. Both stories are based on that boy's trouble at school. In "Seventh Grade", Viktor is starting seventh grade, and his problem is his inability to talk to Teresa like a normal human being. In "Charles", Laurie has trouble adjusting to kindergarten and becomes a kid with bad behavior. Also,
ReplyDeleteI am comparing Charles and Thank You Mam.The comparison of the two is The two boys have problems of behavior and takes it out on some one else.
ReplyDeletei think Seventh grade and charles are different because they have different types of conflicts. In seventh grade, Victor has to deal with a problem within himself. In charles, the mother has to deal with society and all the bad things in the world that she thinks could happen to her son.
ReplyDelete
