"Thank You, Ma'm"

For this week's response, please evaluate "Thank You , Ma'm."

To evaluate means to judge, but just saying, "It was good," or something similar, is not good enough. To get full credit, you must tell me why you judge it the way you do with specific details. Also, include some of our vocabulary, as in, "I think that the protagonist is..." or "I think the conflict..." Be sure to focus on evaluating - judging - the protagonist or the conflict, if you use these examples, and explaining why you judge them the way you do. (These are examples - feel free to use them or to come up with your own way to use our word work).

  1. I think the conflict, of the story "Thank You M'am" is more of a story were the antagonist is the boy who is causing the problems for Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones. But i the conflict of the story is man vs. Society becuase there is a problem between the the lady and the boy, witch s soon going to be fixed in the resolution part of the story.

  2. I think that the protagonist in the short story "Thank you M'am" is about the boy because he caused a problem and now he has to try and fix it. The antagonist is that the boy wanted to try and get away.
I think that the conflict is that the lady grab's the boy by the shirt and shakes him until this teeth shake

  3. In this short story "Thank you , Ma'm" I think that the boy is going to live with the big women who has everything in her purce besides hamer and nails. When she was gripping the boy until his teeth chattered, she noticed his face was dirty and she said 'do u got a home to go after this to wash this off your face'.He said 'no Ma'm". I think the problem is that the boy has nowhere to live.I think the Protagonist is the boy.

  4. I think the protagonist of the short story "Thank You M'am" is the boy because he has a problem that needs to be resolved. When he approached the lady, I was wondering why did he try to steal her purse. All different thoughts were racing through my head. I thought that the boy could be poor and he thought that the lady might be wealthy so he tried to steal her purse. The lady might help the boy and maybe take him in.

  5. I personally think the story "Thank You, Ma'm" is a nice, and happy story so far, but with a sad beginning, turning into a POSSIBLE great ending. I think the protagonist is the lady, because she wants to help this homeless boy, and give him a better life. The antagonist however, is the boy's problem, not the boy.
I think the conflict is a little saddening, and I wish the antagonist would just go away. I don't want the boy to be homeless. It's sad.

  7. I enjoy "Thank You M'am" because the protagonist (the woman) in the story has decided, out of sheer kindness, to help a boy she doesn't know. She could've decided to take the boy and report him for....... I don't know, attempt to steal. She even gives him refuge and will probably help him by giving him food and some water, and money for him to use freely. Though she will probably watch over him she won't take care of him like a mother.I like where the story's at and where it's going.

  8. I really like this book sofar because the boy tried to steal the womans purse but the strap broke, the boy fell, and the woman yelled at him. I think that the conflict is that the boy is homeless and he's trying to find money and a home

  9. So far, I like "Thank You M'am". It is interesting to here them talk with words and expressions that are unique to the south. I also like it because the characters are totally different, one is a boy that is a theif, the other an uptight woman. I think it will be interesting to see how this short story turns out.

  10. So far the story "Thank you Ma'm" is preety funny :).We all know who the Protagonist is (the woman) and i think the antagonist is the boy who tried to steel her BIG purse. Why did the boy want to steel the lady's purse? I meen,it did'nt look like it had something he wanted. Plus,he did deserve to be shaken and then hit, If someone tried to do that to me I would have been so FURIOUSE!!! >:(

  11. I think the conflic is the boy and the protaganist is the lady. I don't think that the lady was not well educated because she talks like this...you a lie. and i don't think that she handled her self all rong because picking the boy up by his coller is not the way to handle it.

  12. I think this story is about a boy that I think is the protagonist. I am rememeber that the lady that catches the boy stealing and I think that the lady is going to take the boy in and teach him manners. Also, the setting sounds like it is in the south. From that information that I gathered from the text that this story is going to be a very good story.

  13. I like this story better than seventh grade. I like it better because it sounds funnier and more interesting.

  14. I think that Thank You Mamm is funny so far. I think the protagonist is the woman. The conflict will be between the woman and the boy refusing to learn proper manners. I think this because the woman is taking him in for now.

  15. In the short story "Thank You M'am" by Langston Hughes, I think the big woman Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones is the protagonist becasue even though the poor boy tried to steal her purse, she wants to help him, wash him, and feed the boy. The boy is the antagonist right now because he was the one who wanted to steal her purse. He is also the antagonist because even though Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones is letting him eat and wash up, he was thinking of making a run for it and leaving the house. I can not wait to hear the ending of the story becasue I have so many mixed predictions on what is going to happen in the end!

I think the protagonist is the Roger because he is getting in a lot of trouble with Mrs. Jones and it seems that he is going to get fixed up by her.The conflict is between the Mrs. Jones and Roger because Mrs. Jones is keeping Roger when he really doesn't want to be there.

  17. I think the book "thankyou Ma'm" is really good so far!!! i think the protagonist will be mrs. Jones and the antagonist will be Roger. i also think maybe Mrs. Jones will help Roger until he has proper manners. I LOVE this book so much that when Mrs.Puccio stops reading it I dont want her to stop!

  18. I think the protagonist of the short story, "Thank You M'am" is the boy. He tried stealing the woman's purse probably thinking there was something in it that could be helpful to him such as money. I think the antagonist is the boy's place in society and the fact that he has no family or money.

  19. I think that the woman is the protagonist in the short story "Thank You Mam" The conflict is that the boy tried to take the womans purse and now she is going to take him in and teach him manners.

  20. In the storey "Thank you M'am" I think that the protaginist is the woman named Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones.I think the Antagonist in the story would be The boy Roger.I think that because in the story the conflict is the boy trys to steal the womans purse. When the boy trys to steal the purse the woman picks him up by his collar and takes him home with her. Sense roger tryed to steal the womans purse it was right to have the woman bring the boy home with her home because the boy needs some help.

  21. I think that the Protagonist in this short story "Thank You M'am" is the little boy because he has a problem that he wont tell Mrs.Jones he just told us there isnt anyone at his home and his face is dirty. I think that Mrs.Jones will feed him and let him get clean and then either keep him or bring him back to his home.

  22. I'm having confusion over who's the protagonist and who's the antagonist. It could be protagonist = Mrs. Jones & antagonist = unnamed teenager. Although, it could be the other way around. Other than who's good or bad, I have to admit that this is really turning out a great short story.

  23. In the short story "Thank You M'am" the conflict or antagonist is Roger because he was the one who tried to steal Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones' big purse. So that must mean that Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones is the protagonist or main character. I wonder if Roger is poor because I think he grabbed the purse thinking that there was money in it? If he isn't poor was he grabbing the purse because someone dared him too? I now think that Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones feels bad for Roger because she ask him if he ate dinner yet, and she told him to wash his face.

  24. In the story Thank you M'am, I think the protagonist is the woman. The conflict is between Roger and the woman. I think that Roger is homeless and will soon live with the woman, as her foster son.

  25. I am enjoying the read-aloud, "Thank You Ma'm." I prefered the read-aloud, "Seventh Grade," however, because I can relate to a seventh grader more than a homeless boy. It was easy to imagine the events in the book, I just pictured Victor in my own classes!
I think that the protagonist is the boy, because if it weren't for him, the story wouldn't be happening right now. Luella Bates Washington Jones would have kept on walking right to her house and her life would have continued undisturbed. Although I believe that Mrs. Jones isn't the antagonist, I feel that she and the boy won't get along for some time(although I think they will eventually). I think that the story is a Man vs. Society, and the boy is battling homelessness.

  26. In the story " Thank You Ma`m" I think the protagonist is Roger because he has to deal with Mrs. Jones teaching him proper manners .

  27. In the story Thank You M'am i think the antagonist is the old lady and the protagonist
is the young boy. I think that the old lady will let the boy go after she feeds and cleans him.

  28. i think the protagonist is roger because he is the one who has a conflict.

  29. I think the protagonist was the boy (Rodger) but I don't think Mrs.Jones was the antagonist. I think this was man vs self because something inside of the boy knew it wasn't right to steal yet something else was saying it was okay. And I liked this read aloud it wasn't my favorite but I liked it.

  30. In the short 'Thank you Ma'm I think the boy is the protagonist . and the antagonist is within the boy because he tried to steal something . I think the lady is just helping the boy she is neither the protagonis or the antagonist . I think the conflict is within the boy . I think the boy was trying to overcome the habbit of stealing and the lady helped him overcome that challenge

  31. I liked the story thank you Ma'm because it was a suprise to me at the end. I think the protagonist is Roger and his problem was stealling the womans purse.

  32. THIS IS AN ADD-ON TO MY PREVIOUS POST!!!!
After completeing the read-aloud, I realized that the story is more of a Man vs. Self, because Roger used to think that stealing was okay, and now he realizes that it is not. Thanks!

  33. I liked "Thank You Ma'm" much better than "Seventh Grade". I like how Mrs.Jones didn't let go of Roger, because she knew he would run. Also since she did one nice deed, he will probably do a nice neeed to someone else. I think the protagonist of the story was Roger, and the antagonist was something inside of him, so it was man v.s. self.

    ReplyDelete
  34. In the story " Thank You Ma'm" the conflict was that the little boy, Roger was trying to steal Mrs.Jones' purse because she had shoes that he wanted but he got in trouble by Mrs.Jones and had to learn proper manners from her like asking and saying thank you. That was the conflict in the story.

  35. I think that "thank you mam" is a very interesting text because a caring woman takes rogger into her home and feeds him, because she understands rogger wanted the money in her purse for a reason. i think the conflict is man vs. self because when rogger had those two chances to run out the door, he didn’t so he was fighting his own fear of not knowing what’s goanna happen next

  36. i judge thank you m'am as funny. Because the way they talk and also what happens in the story like when she said "if i turn you loose will you run" and he said "yes" so she said "then i won't turn you loose" i just laughed in my head.

"Thank You Mam" is strory about a boy nad a woman the protagonist inthis story is the boy "Roger". The antagonist in this story is a force inside the boy Roger. The main thing that we should follow from the story is that we should stel anthing and stealing is bad habbit. the woman in this story is a kind hearted woman named Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones who has teached the boy the lesson that we shoyld never steal anything and after sometime the boyRoger realised it that he was doing the wrong thing and when he had time he couldn`t say more than "Thaank You "

  38. I enjoy this short story. I think its theme is something that we can all take away from this story which is not to steal. I think Roger learned his lessson in this story and that Mrs.Luella Bates Washington Jones shared a simuluar expirence with roger. This was my second time reading the book and I feel like I definatley understand more of the book now that I have read ant took a test on the book twice. I wish to read more short stories like this that have a theme that can help us in life

  39. I think "Thank You Mam", was okay. I liked most of the kind, parts, like when Mrs. Jones brought Rodger home and fed him, and took care of him (sort of), but I did not like the ending. I know that the story was wrapped up, and it was correct, but I did'nt like how (for me), it just left me hanging there with Mrs. Jones giving Rodger 10 dollars to get Blue Swade Shoes. Overall, "Thank you Mam", was a pretty good story, with all of the points on the Plotline, and a good theme. I really hope that Gary Soto finishes this short story as a novel.

  40. I also think that the Protagonist of the story was Rodger, and the conflict was the force inside of him to steal, but he overcame that power by the end of the story when Mrs. Jones tested him by leaving the room with the door open, and her purse just sitting there.

  41. I think that thank you ma'm was very good and had a great theme. The lesson in the book was one of the best i have seen. I think that the protagonist the lady was kind hearted and helped the protagonist overcome man vs self and make him a more respectful person.

  42. the confict in htis story is roger stealing. the protagonist is roger the antagonist is the force in roger that tells him to steal. mrs.jones helped roger over come that by scaring him

  43. I loved the short story "Thank you M'am" and I was surprised with Roger's decision at the end. The Protagonist was Roger and he over came his bad habit.

  44. In the short stoor "Thank you M'am" i was very surprised with the way Roger did not run or try to steal Mrs.Luella Bates Washington Jonse's purse. The Protagonist was deffinatley Roger as weel as the Antagonist which was a force within Roger. This short story was very good and I enjoyed it alot!

  45. i like the story "think you m'am " it was suprising when mrs. jones draged him by his shirt. I think the antagonist was roger and there was no protaginst . i think this story was writn in second person limited. i think that because it sound like mrs. jones was telling the story .

  46. I really liked the short story "Thank You M'am" because I thought it was nice of Mrs.Luella Bates Washington Jones to feed Roger and let him wash up. I predicted he was poor because he wanted to steal Mrs.Jones' for money and she was going to let him stay in her house for a while but my prediction ended up being incorrect. I think that the protagonist was Roger because his problem was he didn't have enough money to pay for the blue shoes he told Mrs.Jones' he wanted. I think that the antagonist would be man vs. society based on the fact that he was either poor or he just didn't have much money.

  47. If I had to rate the short story one through ten I would probably give it a nine because it was real zoomed in on two characters. In the short story "Thank You M'am" The boy named Roger was the protagonist. I think Roger is the protagonist and the conflict of the short story because he had a problem which was him tring to steal Mrs. Luela Bates Washington Jones' purse so he could buy himself some blue swade shoes. I think the antagonist is the force within Roger because he was willing to steal from a women coming back from work late at night just for some blue swade shoes.

  48. The protagonist in "thank you M'am" is Roger, and the antagonist is Mrs. Jones because Roger had a problem that had to be resolved and Mrs.Jones was the one that helped Roger resolve his problem. When Roger trieed to steal Mrs. Jonese's purse alot was racing through my head. Is it cause he thought she was wealthy because her purse was so big? Also when Roger said he wanted the new shoes i wondered if it was because he thought they looked nice or because his shoes were to small and he had no money. The problem was resolved when Roger sat in view of the Mrs.Jones because he wanted her to trust him.

  49. The protagonist of this story is Luella Bates Washington Jones. And the antagonist is roger a homeless boy. I like the story thank you ma’am because it’s a the story of a homeless boy who is getting a lesson teached to him. Miss Luella almost got her purse stolen from roger. Miss Luella caught him and saw him dirty and helped him clean up and gave him food. She also gave him money to buy shoes. The conflict in the story is human vs. human. Because roger tried to rob Luella.

  50. The short story "Thank You M'am" the protagonist has to be Mrs.Jones because she took him home and gave him food and told him to wash his face.I think that the little boy is homeless because he was all dirty and he was wondering around the streets trying to still Mrs.Jones purse. Also i like this short story because it tells how the women helps him out.I would really would like to find out what happens to the boy.

  51. RE-POST!!! Sorry Mrs.Puccio :(. Ok. The protagonist is Rodger and the Antagonist is a force within him self. Mrs.Jones helps Rodger conquer the force within him. When we finished the book I realized that the Protagonist was Rodger (ha! i thought it was Mrs.Jones).

In the book "Thank You M'am" by Langston Hughes the protagonist is the the women Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones. The antagonist is the fourteen year old Boy Roger. The conflict is man vs. self. I thought that in the book Roger never really meant to try to take the women's purse but had to because he is less fortunate. Also that he knew it was wrong so as the text went on Roger concurred his inner-self by not running out the door when Mrs. Jones was not looking. At first appearance Mrs. Jones sounded like a nasty cold hearted women. But in the end she turned out to be a very kind hearted . I would say this because she told Roger to come home with her and to wash his face then offered him dinner. I enjoyed reading this book because it showed me that everyone is not as fortunate as we are and we never appreciate what we have.

  58. I think "Thank You M'am" was a interesting short story with some exitement. I liked the dialouge, the sourthern twist on things. I think the protagonist was roger, and the antagonist is something within roger. The problem is that roger wanted to steal Mrs. Jones purse. It was resolved when the purse was on the bed and roger didnt steal it.

P.S I was on last years website and when I noticed it was to late.
